Am reading ‘LIVE’ updates from MacRumors.com and Engadget.com on Steve Jobs keynote at Apple’s World Wide Developers Conference 2006.
Steve Jobs is not making the whole keynote on his own. He has invited Phil Schiller, SVP of WW Product Marketing, Bertrand Serlet, SVP of Software Engineering and Scott Forstall, VP of platform experience, to do the introductions of the different products and software.
Finally, all Mac products are now Intel-based. The Mac Pro, the successor of PowerMac, has been announced. The Mac Pro will be powered by 2 Woodcrest processors, the updated Intel Xeon processors and part of the Core 2 Duo lineup, up to 3GHz in the same case design. The new Mac Pro will allow up to 2TB of internal storage with 4 500GB hard drives and 15GB of memory. There are up to a possible five million Build-to-Order configurations. They are available as of today in the US. The base configuration starts from US$2,499. Will have to wait a while for availability in Singapore if going by past product launches.
The other one that has yet to transition to Intel processors is the Xserves. They are also going to be using Woodcrest processors. They will have similar specs as the Mac Pro and allow up to 5TB of internal storage. It will still be in the same 1U case design. The new Xserves will be available from October.
Well, that’s all the product launches that have been made so far for product launches. The keynote is now talking about Leopard, the next version of Mac OS X.
Go to the two site above to get updated information as it happens. For me, I’ll be interested in getting a Mac Pro now and pair it with a 30-inch Cinema Display.
Update: You can watching a streaming QuickTime video of the keynote here. Tried to watch, but the streaming was a little flaky. Guess it might be the bandwidth limits in office. Will try to watch it at home in the evening.
Update II: Found out that there are updated Apple Cinema HD Displays as well, but without the in-built iSights as many rumor sites have predicted. The screens now have brighter screens with higher contrasts.
